September 1, 2016 marked the first day of Kathleen Smith’s 40th year as an employee in the Brockton Public Schools and the beginning of her 4th year as its very first female Superintendent.

Accessing her decades of experience in education, Superintendent Smith brings a depth of knowledge of the school district and heartfelt affection for its students and families. Her vision for leading a successful 21st-Century school system is voiced in the district’s mission statement; The Brockton Public Schools ensures student success by fulfilling the educational, social, and emotional needs of all students in the pursuit of instructional excellence.

Mrs. Smith believes all children can learn and every teacher can and must contribute. Her vision of instructional excellence for every student, every day has garnered Brockton national recognition for literacy and reducing the achievement gap.

Mrs. Smith serves on the boards of the MetroSouth Chamber of Commerce, the Children’s Museum in Easton and the Brockton Area Workforce Investment Board and the DJ Dream Fund, Inc. Seldom idle, for SY 2017 she has been appointed co-chair of the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Schools’ Urban Superintendents Network and has accepted an invitation to sit on the Renaissance Learning Advisory Board.

Superintendent Smith is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents, the District Administration Leadership Institute and the National Superintendents Roundtable.

Superintendent Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in special education and elementary education from Westfield State University, a master’s degree in guidance counseling from Bridgewater State University and a juris doctorate from New England School of Law.

On a personal note, Kathy has been married for 33 years to Gerald B. Smith, also a longtime, 37 years, retired school administrator of Brockton Public Schools. Together they have raised daughters Ashleigh, now living and working in Austin, TX and Jacqueline, living and working in Washington, DC.
